Charlton fan in peace

According to this piece in the Sunday People, David Sullivan is eying up Charlton Athletic as his next football investment. I was wondering what the opinions about the fella are on this forum.

This has, obviously, been discussed on our own forum. So far, we seem to be of the opinion that money is money - we need investment and if someone offers enough we should take it and not worry massively about where it is from (don't forget we were being lined up by Dubai-based Zabeel investments not so long ago).

There is also a feeling on our forum that Birmingham fans' discontent with Sullivan stems from the fact that he was willing to back a manager even after failure and was not willing to break the bank for mid-table mediocrity. This was the blueprint Charlton's success in the Prem years so this type of policy would not faze us.

What are your opinions? Would it be a good/bad move for us?

Cheers in advance...

You judge. It took from 1993 to 2002 to get to the premier league.
1997 we were made a PLC and listed on the AIM thereafter the club stood
on its own feet.
In other words the owners did not invest their own money but the PLC.
They did now and then loan the club a few thousand at low interest but it was always payed back by BCFC plc.
After 2002 promotion to the Premier through lack of investment we have had 2 relagations and this season they have left us again in a precarious position through their lack of investment ( 1 win in 9 games) and we have to hang on till the January transfer window and hope we are still in contention to stay up.
My own opinion, forget the spin from them and their media friends and stay well clear.

you will have someone who loves the media, rips you off at every possoble chance to boost up his "sons inheritance", will make you false promise after false promise after false promise - and a whole lot of spin to go with it, he will slate you fans in the ****, he will not invest a penny of his own money in the club, he will sell any players that are worth selling and not re-invest the money back into the team and will miss out on your managers top targets because he will want to pay for them over 10 years........

and im sure people will add more!!!
These are soley my views and not necessarily the views of the Birmingham Mail, its employees or any of its affiliates!

No all he is interested in is himself and money. And he will bring the rest of his cronies with him.

He will promise you the earth and rip you off at every opportunity, and then blame you the fans.

You Charlton fans have endured enough without suffering this vain bunch of tosspots, who would rip off the fans and line their bank accounts at every opportunity.

Good luck to you boys anyway, nice to see you at the top of the table. Always enjoyed my visits to the Valley.

well we had to put up with promises of big name players coming to the club then haha you guessed it being let down and suddenly the transfer money for that player dissapeared like it has done season after season
Sully spends around 8 million in the summer for transfers and were in the prem so god knows how much he will give charlton plus knowing sully he will make out he is interested in buying you but will probly go ahead with the purchase just as the jan window closes so in turn he dont have to shell out any money

I speak to a Charlton fan at my snooker club and he knows that DS is just in football to get as much cash as he can for himself, oh, and his sons inheritance. If that means screwing the fans to line his own pocket, so be it.Someone who can change clubs at the drop of a hat, I would not trust them as far as I could throw them.Best of luck but be careful what you wish for.

I hope he buys some team somewhere, its one less side we ever have to worry about again. Hopefully itl be the self preclaimed "academy", imagine him robbing them blind, it'd be aright old cockney barrell of mankeys.

oh and if like, and think it important, that charlton has a reserve team ........forget it. he will scrap that like he did with us, so our up and coming and fringe players had no competetive games to play!!!

Errbody- as you can see from the posts the DS/DG subject is quite a raw subject and you probably havent got the most balanced view.

In the 16 years they were at blues i got to see 4 promotions, 1 League Cup Final, a play off final victory and a Football league trophy victory.

They are also very loyal to their managers- we had Barry Fry, TF, Brucey and Mcleish come in,in that time which represents how they stick by their man.

In the past 7 years i have also got to watch premiership football in 5 of those years and seen some damn good players come through the door as a result- Upson, Dugarry, Zarate, Cunningham, David Dunn and Emile Heskey to name a few

So its not all bad.

However the old board peaked at 2004 when they finished at our best position and failed to invest (as a charlton fan im sure you understand that problem). They out priced the average supporter and got greedy with the income from sponsorship and sold us out to the people with the most money. On the back of that they stopped investing any real money in the team and we ended up with a team of old expensive players (Nicky Butt, Muzzy Izzett and Chris Sutton) that dragged us down.

They arent very good at PR and the constant sniping between the fans and the board does the club no good at all. They love **** attention good and bad and sometimes you just wish they would

In summary im sure when our wounds have healed we may look back and not sound so bitter. It wasnt all bad but as a football fan you dont want mediocrity and thats all they could deliver by running a club on a tight budget

Its simple my friend...They will leave your Club in a lot stronger postion then when they first found it.

But it all depends on what your fans are looking for?

Is it multi million pound signings,Champions league football or a team that is competing for the league every season? If so then these people are not for you.

But if you want the sizable debt that you carry at the moment wiped away, the clubs long term future secured and a chance of being back in the Premership within the next few seasons then these people are a safe bet.

They are excellent lower league owners that get things done and can drive a club forward, without putting the life of the club in jeopardy.

At the moment they are better then what you have and were much better then what we had when they first took us over and they will benefit your Club 100%.

But i must warn you they will do this for you but will expect to get paid and at the end of most years expect to make a profit...This sent our supporters wild with anger because most of them thought they should of done it for FREE!!!

If you can get over this little obstacle of life and businessmen then you will reap the rewards until you hit the buffers of the Premiership.

I say use them as much as they will use you!!!

When you are back in the Prem, then you will have to come back on here and we will tell you some more home truths on what path your club will take once you are back there and how painful and messy that could be but until then you should hope it comes off for you because they will rebuild your club and give it a future.

KRO!!!
